Peugeot 308: New vehicle preparation : Check of the ancillaries battery 1 - PEUGEOT vehicles

Peugeot 308 2021-2025 (P5) Service Manual / Vehicle :: General / New Vehicle Preparation and static presentation of a new vehicle / New vehicle preparation : Check of the ancillaries battery 1 - PEUGEOT vehicles

ESSENTIAL : Observe the safety and cleanliness recommendations .

Whatever its design, an ancillaries battery is subject to slow discharge while on stock, this owing to the following phenomena :

  • Natural self-discharging of the ancillaries battery (4 % per month)
  • Existence of permanent power consuming equipment as a result of the vehicle not having been inhibited by placing the shunt in the parc position

Regular recharging of the ancillaries battery will keep its charge intact.

A voltage lower than the nominal voltage (around 12 Volts) corresponds to a critical level of discharge which can lead to the ancillaries battery suffering damage.

The handing over to the customer of a new vehicle fitted with an ancillaries battery that has been stored with its voltage lower than the nominal voltage often engenders problems that spell dissatisfaction to the Customer and cost to the Marque.

Check the state of charge of the ancillaries battery while it is on stock, when destocking and also during the New Vehicle Preparation (PDI), so as to prevent it from reaching the critical level of discharge.

3. Check of the charge status of ancillaries battery ‎1 using a voltmeter

CAUTION : To guarantee a reliable voltage reading, take the measurement on a vehicle at rest.

Refer to the method : Check - Recharged : Ancillaries battery.

3.1. Definition of the vehicle rest required before reading the voltage

A vehicle is considered to be at rest either if it has remained untouched (its engine not started, its lamps not switched on, the display "READY" not showing in the instrument panel, etc.) for at least one hour prior to the checking of the voltage, or if it has gone through the procedure for being placed at rest as described below.

CAUTION : If accessing the ancillaries battery necessitates leaving one of the doors open, manually close the catch of the lock of the door involved, to decoy the electrical system.

Procedure for placing the vehicle at rest :

  • Switch on the headlamps for 2 minutes
  • Switch off the headlamps
  • Close the vehicle doors without locking them (Do not carry out any action for 10 minutes)
  • Check the voltage before starting the engine
  • If the catch of the lock of the door involved has been manually closed, return it to the open position

4. Charging of ancillaries battery 1

4.1. Recommendations and instructions

CAUTION : Recharging the ancillaries battery 1 when connected to the vehicle using tooling that does not meet the specifications described below may destroy the ECUs on the vehicle.

The recharging must be carried out in a well-ventilated area.

Do not remove the ancillaries battery 1 in order to recharge it.

Recharging the ancillaries battery 1 must be carried out with the battery connected to the vehicle, using a battery charger which meets the following criteria (Normal, "EF" or "VRLA / AGM" types of battery) :

  • Voltage limited to 16 V
  • Adjustable maximum current
  • Programmable or limited duration of charging
  • Stopping of charging at a minimum current
  • Safety from the risks of inverting the polarity
  • Possibility to use the battery charger on a continuous basis

Specifications of the battery charger recommended by the manufacturer (MIDTRONICS) :

  • Battery diagnosis (At the start and at the finish of battery charging)
  • Rapid charge (Less than 3 hours)
  • Traceability for monitoring of the battery charging

CAUTION : Keep to the correct sequence for connecting the battery charger cables on the terminals.

Order of connection of the cables (Without disconnection of the terminal leads) :

  • Connect the positive cable on the charger to the positive terminal on the ancillaries battery 1
  • Connect the negative cable on the charger to the negative terminal on the ancillaries battery 1

N.B. : If ancillaries battery ‎1 has to be replaced, recharge the new ancillaries battery ‎ before fitting it on the vehicle.

4.2. Check after ancillaries battery ‎1 has finished recharging

Once recharging of the ancillaries battery 1 has been completed, check the voltage in the ancillaries battery 1 while the vehicle is stationary.

If using a battery tester, check after recharging that the state of charge displayed by the battery tester is : " BATTERY OK ".

CAUTION : If accessing ancillaries battery ‎1 necessitates leaving one of the doors open, manually close the catch of the lock of the door involved, to decoy the electrical system.

If using a voltmeter, follow the procedure below :

  • Switch on the headlamps for 2 minutes
  • Switch off the headlamps
  • Close the vehicle doors without locking them (Do not carry out any action for 10 minutes)
  • Check the voltage in the ancillaries battery 1 before starting the engine
  • Check that the ancillaries battery 1 voltage is greater than 12,8 V
  • If the catch of the lock of the door involved has been manually closed, return it to the open position

5. Replacement of ancillaries battery ‎1

ESSENTIAL : Observe the safety and cleanliness recommendations .

CAUTION : After replacing or removing the ancillaries battery, carry out the operations below.

5.1. Check the replacement ancillaries battery

Specifications of the replacement ancillaries battery :

  • New ancillaries battery (of the correct Part No.) with the same specifications as the original ancillaries battery (Voltage; Starting current ; Power capacity)
  • Usage limit date later than the ancillaries battery replacement date
  • Value displayed by the battery tester E-XTEQ / MIDTRONICS / NAYTHAN : "BATTERY OK"
  • Voltage higher than 12,4 V if using a voltmeter (Normal, "EF" or "VRLA / AGM" types of battery)
  • Voltage higher than 12,6 V if using a voltmeter for battery type "VRLA / AGM"

5.2. Connect the replacement ancillaries battery

CAUTION : Observe the tightening torques.

N.B. : The spade terminals may be of the screw type or of the clip type, referred to as quick-fit spade terminals.

In all cases the method for connecting the ancillaries battery terminals is as follows.

Illustration operation

Open the terminal (Screwed terminal)Lift the paddle (Clipped terminal)

Open the terminal (Screwed terminal)Lift the paddle (Clipped terminal)Position the spade terminal connector fully down on the ancillaries battery terminal(at "a")

Lock the spade terminal by tightening the screw or by pressing on the lever until the stop is reached(at "b")

Visually check that the connector is in contact with the base of the ancillaries battery terminal 1(at "a")Visually check that the connector is flush with the top of the ancillaries battery terminal (at "c")

Incorrect fitting : Example 1- The terminal is not in contact with the base of the ancillaries battery(at "a")- The terminal is not flush with the upper part of the ancillaries battery terminal(at "c")

Incorrect fitting : Example 2- The paddle is not locked(at "b")

5.3. Check

Move the cable about so as to check that the spade terminal connector is securely held on the ancillaries battery terminal.

CAUTION : Perform the operations that are required following a reconnection of the ancillaries battery .

6. Special case
